Winter Proofing Your Caravan

The winter can be a long time and have very changing weather conditions. It is important to prepare your caravan for this as much as possible.

Ensure all fluids are drained. This includes the fresh water system and the toilet. Remember if the caravan freezes then water expands and this is when damage can occur.

If possible remove cushions and bedding from the caravan. This helps prevent damp and condensation by allowing air to circulate more. If it is not possible to remove them the prop them up so they are not flat on the bunks or against the walls.

Remove all food items. This will help prevent vermin entering your caravan, as food can obviously attract them, and if this is in good supply they could stay for a long period of time. Not only is this a messy situation, but they can also cause damage to cushions, bedding, wiring and furniture, leaving a large repair bill for the damage.

Clean and empty the fridge, leaving the door open slightly to allow for ventilation. If it is left closed for a long period of time it will smell and mould could develop.

Make sure the toilet has been properly emptied and cleaned out. Imagine what you could be faced with in the spring if this is not done!!

Remove any items of value, and as much other stuff as possible to allow air to circulate around the caravan.

The week before you want to use the caravan for the first time it is a good idea to put a dehumidifier in the caravan to try and remove moisture from it and put the heater on for a while to take the chill out of the air.

Check through the caravan and then start to replace items taken out so that you are packed and ready to go. Check things like the smoke alarm, water, electric and gas systems so that you are not in for any surprises when you get on site. It is better to find a problem at home than on the field. Check the tyres on the caravan for damage and ensure they are correctly inflated.
